About the film:

Douglas Sirk’s sumptuous but scathing melodrama explores the various obstacles and objections raised by a middle-class widow’s family and friends against her blossoming relationship with a younger, vaguely bohemian gardener. The exact, exquisite compositions and colours express a stultifying sense of entrapment by social conformism, materialism and hypocrisy.

“All That Heaven Allows is one of cinema’s most scathing attacks on the ugly paranoia and hatred that can lurk behind suburban walls, Jane Wyman stars as Cary, a widow who falls in love with a younger gardener (Rock Hudson), to the disgust of her adult children and her ‘friends’ in the community. It’s an utterly beautiful film to look at, but the nastiness and snobbery on display is anything but.
The film was a huge influence on Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Todd Haynes, who paid homage to the film in Fear Eats the Soul (1974) and Far from Heaven (2002) respectively.” Alex Davidson (BFI)
